Preface

This harmony is inspired by the similar book "A Harmony of the Gospels for Students of the Life of Christ" by A. T. Robertson. (His work, in turn, was based upon that of Broadus.) I had intended to use his sections and citations in an online version of the harmony, which would use the text of the NIV (New International Version) rather than the RV (Revised Version) that was current when Robertson published his work in 1922. But as I examined his work more closely, I felt that Robertson had done only half the job: he left the sayings of Jesus largely unanalyzed. I also felt that the gospel of John could be better integrated into the harmony, and that Luke's "Great Journey to Jerusalem" required more scrutiny.

Robertson used Mark as the historical backbone of his harmony, and placed the Markan citation first whenever it was present. I have retained the use of Mark as the historical backbone, but reverted to the traditional order which places Matthew first. This results in Mark being in the center column between Matthew and Luke when all three are present, which is where one might expect to visually encounter a backbone. I have also combined certain transitional passages with the sections they introduce or conclude, but which Robertson separated because they indicated a movement to a new physical location. Even more frequently, I divided long sections whenever I felt a change of subject or genre was indicated, or where I wished to introduce a new parallel.

My purpose is slightly different from Robertson's, so I have chosen to put parallel passages together even when differences in details might make it questionable that they are the same event. In analyzing the sayings of Jesus, I made use of the indications of parallelism in the marginal notes of the NJB (New Jerusalem Bible, 1985) and NIV (New International Version, 1988). Since the sayings of Jesus were largely divorced from their historical context by the time they came to be written down in the gospels, I chose to maintain as much as possible of the thematic context that the gospel writers themselves established. For instance, I chose to keep Matthew's Sermon on the Mount and eschatological discourse intact, moving the parallel passages of Luke to the section most natural for Matthew. I usually chose to include introductory or concluding verses in a citation even when they contrasted rather than paralleled the other gospels, thus minimizing "orphan" verses.

The titles are entirely my own, hopefully more descriptive, and certainly more succinct than Robertson's. The section number before each citation will aid those who wish to compare my work with his. It is my hope and prayer that this work will aid many in their study of the bible by presenting the parallel passages of the gospels side by side for easy comparison.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

24b Mt 4:18-22; Mk 1:16-20; Lk 5:1-11; Jn 1:35-51  Calls of Andrew, Simon, Others

32  Jn 2:23-25  Jesus Visits Jerusalem for the Passover Feast
Note: John recalls Jesus going up to Jerusalem for a Passover at this point in his ministry, but both of the stories he associates with this event show signs of being late in Jesus' ministry, so I have moved them to sections 129d and 129e.

Jesus Visits Jerusalem During a Feast

49a Jn 5:1-15  Jesus Heals Man at Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem on the Sabbath
49b Jn 5:16-47  Jesus Answers His Critics, Calling God His Own Father

See also section 173 where the Mark also notes 7 demons were expelled from Mary Magdalene.
Note: Luke appears to think Mary the sister of Martha and Lazarus is the same as Mary Magdalene, though he never says so explicitly. He merely goes out of his way to place the story of Mary anointing Jesus at this point in his gospel, a context appropriate to Magdala in Galilee; and instead of naming her explicitly, noting that she had a bad reputation (consistent with a woman who had been host to seven demons). He seems to be unaware that Mary, Martha, and Lazarus reside in Bethany near Jerusalem. I have not retained his context for the anointing: see section 141.

Jesus Visits Jerusalem for Feast of Tabernacles

94a Jn 7:2-10  Jesus Refuses to go to Jerusalem With His Brothers
94b Lk 17:11-19  Jesus Heals Ten Lepers, One Returns to Thank Him
Note: This healing must take place on this or an earlier visit to Jerusalem, not the last which does not originate in either Samaria or Galilee, but rather Ephraim in Judea. Robertson puts this in section 120; but the footnote explaining his interpretation is not persuasive. He thinks it "reasonably supposed" that Jesus would travel north to go south. I disagree, especially since Galilee would be dangerous then (see section 113).

Jesus Sends out 72 Disciples to Galilee and Samaria

102a Lk 9:51-56  Jesus "Sets His Face" to go to Jerusalem
Note: Lk 9:51 is the most problematic verse in Luke. The obvious interpretation is that Jesus is setting out for Jerusalem for the last time, immediately. But Luke later contradicts such an interpretation in several places. The statement apparently has more to do with attitude than itinerary. Jesus has just prophesied of his death for the first time in Lk 9:22-25 (section 83). My interpretation is that Jesus decides to make a farewell circuit of Galilee and Samaria before heading south. Robertson puts this in section 95, discounting the timing of Lk 9:51a.
Lk 9:51 introduces a long sequence (to Lk 18:14) where Luke diverges from the other gospels. It appears to be a series of episodes and sayings which Luke has collected from a variety of sources, originally detached from historical context, which Luke has constructed into a long journey with a vague itinerary leading to Jerusalem. He frequently uses material which Matthew also uses, but in other contexts. Since the order of this sequence is usually at odds with the other gospels, I have chosen not to leave it intact, but to merge it with the other gospels wherever possible.

Jesus Leaves Galilee for the Last Time, Visits Bethany

Note: It appears that Jesus finds a safe haven at Judea beyond Jordan (northern Perea, where John used to baptize), but He stays there only a short time before visiting Jerusalem for the Feast of the Dedication.
104a Mt 19:1-12; Mk 10:1-12; Lk 13:22  Jesus Leaves Galilee, Preaches Against Divorce
See also the similar teaching reported by Matthew and Luke in section 54h. Note: Robertson put Mt and Mk in section 122, ignoring the statement in Jn 10:40 (section 112) that says that Jesus returned to Judea beyond Jordan after attending the Feast of the Dedication in Jn 10:22-39 (section 111). He put Lk in section 113, which is immediately after a visit to Jerusalem.
104b Lk 10:38-42  Jesus Visits Bethany, Praises Mary to Martha
Note: Bethany is only 15 stadia (2 miles) from Jerusalem (Jn 11:18), but Luke appears to be unaware that Mary and Martha live in Bethany, so he continues to report that Jesus teaches His way through towns and villages to Jerusalem after this story (see section 104a).

Preparations for Jesus' Death

140  Mt 26:1-5; Mk 14:1-2; Lk 22:1-2; Jn 12:9-11  Chief Priests Plot Against Jesus
141  Mt 26:6-13; Mk 14:3-9; Lk 7:36-50; Jn 12:2-8  Jesus Anointed by Mary in Bethany
Note: Luke is the only one who reports that the woman (Luke leaves Mary unnamed) had a bad reputation. Perhaps he is thinking of the 7 demons expelled from Mary Magdalene (see sections 60 and 173). The NJB denies that Lk reports the same incident as the others, apparently to protect Mary's reputation; but what are the chances that two such unusual events would take place, both in the house of a man named Simon?

Resurrection, Appearances, and Ascension

Note: There is some difficulty in reconciling the four accounts at this point. I interpret the sequence of events to be:

1.The angels appear and scare off the guards.
2.The women (Mary Magdalene, Mary wife of Alpheus and mother of apostle James, Salome wife of Zebedee and mother of apostles James and John, and Joanna wife of Chuza steward of Herod) discover the empty tomb and are greeted by the angels.
3.They report the empty tomb to the apostles.
4.The women take Peter and John back to the tomb.
5.Peter and John inspect the tomb and leave.
6.Mary Magdalene and Mary wife of Alpheus, (possibly others) stay behind, grieving.
7.Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene and the others as they start to leave.
8.Mary Magdalene and the others report this appearance to the apostles.

169a Mk 16:1  Women Buy Spices after Sabbath is over (Saturday Evening)
169b Mt 28:1; Mk 16:2-3; Lk 24:1; Jn 20:1  Women go to Tomb at Dawn on Sunday
170  Mt 28:2-4  Earthquake and Angel Frightens Guards
171  Mt 28:5-8; Mk 16:4-8; Lk 24:2-8  Tomb is Discovered Empty
Note: Implied but not stated by Jn 20:1 (section 169b).

Reading progress notes as of 2001-10-30 13:38

Reading progress notes as of 2001-10-30 13:38

There are a total of 1189 chapters in the Bible; I have read 506 of them, so I guess I'm about %42.5568 through. Currently I'm on Joshua 12.

On or about the 27th of this month, I took a online Bible Knowledge Quiz, in the beginner level, on the subject of Characters. From memory, I got 12 of the 20 questions correct, for a score of %60. Adjusted against all catagories, skill levels, and other testers, I ranked %77 percent.

Bible Trivia; middlemost verse.

(KJV/NIV)

If my source is correct, and my interpretation of wc & egrep is correct, in KJV there are: 31102 verses, 820736-31102=789634 words, and 1189 chapters. Of course, common knowledge is that there are 66 books.

Note this does not apply to NIV (and probably other translations), as verses were translated differently, and some omitted (Mark 9:44, Mark 11:26, Mark 15:28,
Luke 17:36, Luke 23:17, John 5:4, Acts 8:37, Acts 15:34, Acts 24:7, Acts 28:29, Romans 16:24, and I John 5:7). So, I assume for NIV, there are 31102-12=31090 verses.

Bible Trivia; middlemost verse.

Bible Trivia; middlemost verse.
In service today, one of the members of the Singles I class overheard me speaking with Becky about my reading of Psalm 117 (The shortest chapter in the Bible) and Psalm 119 (the longest chapter in the Bible). He stated that Psalm 118:8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. was the middle verse. From the KJV.TXT file I found at work, there are 31168 verses in the Bible, the middle (15584) being Psalm 101:4 A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person. This trivia, of course, is based on the King James Version, and not any other translation. It also assumes that the text of the KJV I have is accurate, and that there are no errors in the text editor (UltraEdit) that I'm using.

Colossians - NRSV

Colossians - NRSV
3:12 As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.
3:13 Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
3:14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect
harmony.
3:15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.
3:17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

LIKE BEING A PUMPKIN: A woman recently baptized was asked by a co-worker what it was like to be a Christian. The woman replied, "It's like being a pumpkin. God picks you from the patch, brings you in and washes all the dirt off that you might have gotten from the other pumpkins. Then he cuts the top off and scoops out al the yucky stuff. He removes the seeds of doubt, hate and greed. Then he carves you a new smiling face and puts his light inside of you to shine for all the world to see."

Satan, Get thee behind me

Satan, Get thee behind me
2001-12-29 03:59

Mat16:23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
Mat16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Mat16:25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
Mat16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Mark8:33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.
Mark8:34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Mark8:35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.

Isn't it strange...

Isn't it strange...

... how a 20-dollar bill seems like such a large amount when you donate it to church, but such a small amount when you go shopping?

... how endless an hour seems when we are serving God, but how short it is when we watch a basketball game for 60 minutes?

... how 2 hours seem so long when you're at church, and how short they seem when you're watching a good movie?

... that you can't find a word to say when you're praying, but you have no trouble thinking what to talk about with a friend?

... how difficult and boring it is to read one chapter of the Bible, but how easy it is to read 100 pages of a popular novel?

... how everyone wants front-row-tickets to concerts or games, but they do whatever is possible to sit at the last row in Church?

... how we need to know about an event for Church 2-3 weeks before the day so we can include it in our agenda, but we can adjust it for other events in the last minute?

... how difficult it is to learn a fact about God and to share it with others, but how easy it is to learn, understand, extend and repeat gossip?

... how we believe everything that magazines and newspapers say, but we question the words in the Bible?

... how everyone wants a place in heaven, but they don't want to believe, do, or say anything to get there?

... how we send jokes in e-mails and they are forwarded right away, but when we are going to send messages about God, we think about it twice before we share it with others?

IT'S STRANGE ISN'T IT?

Now that you've read this message, send it on to anybody that you consider a friend. If you don't do it not only you will deprive yourself from being blessed, but you will also do that to others who may need God in their life.

It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment. 24 He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him: 25 But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them. 26 Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer.

Translational Information

Translational Information

I was quoting from the NRSV (New Revised Standard Version).

There are quite a number of "Standardized" versions of the Bible out there. To make a LONG story short here are a couple pieces to that puzzle.

The original text of the documents that are included in todays Bible were written in several different languages - primarily Hebrew and Greek.

The choices come mostly come into play when you want to read the Bible in a modern language (like english). Most modern english versions are pretty good. All though some people won't look at anything other than the King James Version I really lean toward the New International Version (NIV), the newly revised New American Study Bible (NASB), and the NRSV.

One of the differences between these translations is the translation method. One method - "Formal Equivalence" tries to make the most direct and literal translation that is easily understandable in english (NRSV, NASB) The other method - "Dynamic equivalence" tries to recreate in the reader the experience of the original readers. (NIV) Both are good but if you are going to get down to some nitty gritty study I lean toward a formal equivalence and sometimes a dynamic equivalence is good for general reading.

Additionally, there are paraphrases like the Living Bible. These do not place as much dependence upon the text in the original languages (sometimes none).

Try dropping into Christian Supply on Pine street and checking out the NIV (New International Version) or the New Living Translation. I think you will find them much more readable. I would suggest starting with the Gospel of Mark or Luke - they give a good picture of Jesus and won't bog you down in a bunch of tough stuff. Then, especially if you read Luke, try Acts then 1st John (different than the Gospel of John - it is towards the very back).

1)           name Hades or Pluto, the god of the lower regions
2)           Orcus, the nether world, the realm of the dead
3)           later use of this word: the grave, death, hell

In Biblical Greek it is associated with Orcus, the infernal regions, a dark and dismal place in the very depths of the earth, the common receptacle of disembodied spirits. Usually Hades is just the abode of the wicked, Lu. 16:23, Rev. 20:13,14; a very uncomfortable place. TDNT.
Enhanced Strong's Lexicon, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.) 1995.

Mt 11:23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
Mt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Lk 10:15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.
Lk 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Ac 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Ac 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
1 Co 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
Re 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
Re 6:8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
Re 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
Re 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

907 baptizo { bap-tid'-zo}

907 baptizo { bap-tid'-zo}

from a derivative of 911; TDNT - 1:529,92; verb

AV - baptize (76), wash 2, baptist 1, baptized + 2258 1; 80

GK - 966 { baptivzw }

1)           to dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge (of vessels sunk)
2)           to cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash one's self, bathe
3)           to overwhelm

Not to be confused with 911, bapto. The clearest example that shows the meaning of baptizo is a text from the Greek poet and physician Nicander, who lived about 200 B.C. It is a recipe for making pickles and is helpful because it uses both words.  Nicander says that in order to make a pickle, the vegetable should first be `dipped' (bapto) into boiling water and then `baptised' (baptizo) in the vinegar solution. Both verbs concern the immersing of vegetables in a solution. But the first is temporary. The second, the act of baptising the vegetable, produces a permanent change.
When used in the New Testament, this word more often refers to our union and identification with Christ than to our water baptism. e.g. Mark 16:16. `He that believes and is baptised shall be saved'. Christ is saying that mere intellectual assent is not enough.  There must be a union with him, a real change, like the vegetable to the pickle!
Bible Study Magazine, James Montgomery Boice, May 1989.

Divorce (see Marriage)

Divorce  (see Marriage)
The Hebrew and Greek terms for divorce ("to send away," "to separate," "to set free") signify the dissolution of marriage with the result that the divorced person was free to remarry except for certain restrictions. In the Mosaic Law, remarrying the original partner was restricted (cf. De 24:1). In the NT all remarriage was denied so long as there was the possibility of reconciliation (1 Co 7:11). The question of a permitted ground for divorce based on the teaching of Jesus and the apostle Paul has evoked diverse responses. Some limit the exception clause in Jesus' prohibition of divorce (e.g., Mt 5:31) to marriages within the proscribed laws of consanguinity (cf. Le 18:6) or unfaithfulness during the betrothal period. Most understand Jesus as allowing divorce for adultery or other serious sexual sin that violates the marriage covenant. Many also see desertion as biblical grounds for divorce based on Paul's teaching (1 Co 7:15). Whether the apostle means that the bond of marriage is broken when the unbeliever departs, or simply that the believer is not bound to serve the other as marriage partner (without reference to divorce and remarriage), is not clear. The entire tenor of Scripture views divorce as opposed to God's intended marriage design and permitted only as the lesser evil in severely destructive marital circumstances.

Marriage

Marriage
Marriage was the first divine institution of Scripture and the only one established for mankind before the entrance of sin. As such it is the foundational institution of human society. The divine ideal is established with the first man and woman (cf. Ge 2:18-25). The description of "cleaving" together so as to form "one flesh" depicts marriage as a union of love (cf. Hos 2:19) between a man and a woman forming a permanent community of personal concern and fidelity. It involves a covenant relationship (Mal 2:14). The explanation of woman being a "helper suitable" for man further explains marriage as equal partners in a complementary relation of mutual help. The selfishness of sin disrupts marital harmony, bringing turmoil, infidelity, and sometimes dissolution to marriages. Because of the hardness of human hearts God permitted deviations from His creation ideal but regulated them from excessive abuse (cf. Mt 19:4-8). The marriage institution relates only to natural life on earth and is not retained in the resurrection life (Mt 22:30). (See also DIVORCE).

APOSTLES' CREED, Traditional Version

APOSTLES' CREED, Traditional Version

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen
